The pro-abortion crowd greeted the arrival of the Abortion Pill in Canada with shouts of joy. Having this option means that women don’t have to go to a clinic or hospital to have an abortion, they can have one in the comfort of their own home. As the Abortion Pill, also known as Mifegymiso, becomes more available, it is important for the pro-life movement to know exactly how it works, for a very specific reason: some women who start the process of having an abortion at home regret doing so, and if they do, there’s a possibility that they can get medical help before it’s too late for their baby.
Mifegymiso is a two-step drug regimen and is recommended until the 49th day of pregnancy. Mifepristone, which blocks the production of progesterone, is taken first. Without adequate progesterone, the lining of the uterus breaks down, and the baby dies. Between 48-72 hours after taking Mifepristone, Misoprostol is taken, which together with Mifepristone creates severe cramping and contractions, often accompanied by heavy bleeding, to expel the baby from the uterus.
The time between taking Mifepristone and Misoprostol is the period in which a woman can change her mind, the sooner, the better. If a woman goes to her doctor less than 72 hours after taking Mifepristone, progesterone can be administered to reverse this process. Unfortunately, the reversal process is not always successful, but according to the Canadians Physicians for Life, 300 healthy babies have been born to women who reversed their abortions as of September 2017. It is crucial that pro-lifers have this knowledge, as it is potentially life-saving.
Canadian Physicians for Life wrote an article entitled “Abortion Pill Reversal in Canada,” which gives more information on how Mifegymiso works, as well as what the reversal process entails. It includes the most recent medical information on the subject, as well as information that can be brought along to a woman’s doctor if she finds herself in this difficult position. We cannot recommend reading this article highly enough. When a woman regrets taking Mifepristone, there is very little time to get her help successfully, so the more knowledgeable pro-lifers are, the better equipped they will be to help.
